Buzzing about our Bee Weekend - Saturday 25th June – Friday 1st July

Added on 23 June 2011

With the latest news that certain types of Bees are becoming endangered and even extinct in Britain's gardens, Mike Burks of The Gardens Group and his team at Castle, Brimsmore and Poundbury Gardens are determined to do all they can to help gardeners protect Bees in Dorset and Somerset.

The Gardens Group garden centres in Sherborne, Yeovil and Poundbury are running a series of events and activities this summer and the first main event is a week buzzing with Bee activities, talks and competitions. Mike Burks comments: "We've all been aware of the worrying statistics about Bees and the reducing numbers in gardens and if the decline continues, this could have serious implications, since most plants rely on bees and other insects for pollination. It is in everyone's interest to garden with Bees and other wildlife in mind and our Bee Weekends will hopefully help gardeners to encourage Bees into their gardens and to look after them while they are there. The little things we do as gardeners can have a massive impact when they are all combined - so we hope people will come along and take one step to being a Bee-friendly gardener!"

Experts will be on hand to answer questions, there will be Bee-friendly garden displays; a talk and question time with Chris Slade - co-author of Getting The Best From Your Bees; local honey on sale and special honey recipes on the menu in each of The Gardens Group restaurants.

The Bee Week will take place at all three garden centres and talks will take place on the following dates. Talks are free to attend and places do not need to be booked in advance although booking is recommended.
